Poetry and Psychotherapy: Resilience and the Creative Process

Monday April 12 at MAHEC

Poems are about changes. So is life. In this workshop, participants will explore how language loosens in poetry to permit healing through transformation in small, incremental steps. Participants will also explore how the creative process of writing poems aids in the building of resilience and self healing. If the ego is fixed on keeping things the same, poetry is a pathway to relaxing its grip and allowing a new self to emerge. By giving voice to the psyche, poetry permits an exchange of past and present, loss and gain, powerlessness and power. This process can lead to an awakening of resilience and move us into new ways of seeing and experiencing life.

Participants will:

  • Explore a selection of poems by poets who have survived trauma.
  • Look at how change operates in the language of poems as a reflection of how change operates in the psyche.
  • Write poems and look at them as vehicles of change.
  • Learn tools for incorporating poetry into psychotherapeutic practices.
  • Expand their perception of poetry as an application in psychotherapeutic practice.
  • Sharpen skills in reading poems for shows of the psyche’s strength in moving through the healing process.
  • Discuss the role of equilibrium in healing—when it must be lost and how it can be found again.

Workshops and Classes and Parties

Have and alchemical birthday party--this stuff is not dull. For your next birthday, make it a rite of passage not just for you but for your friends as well. Alchemy is engaging and eye-opening, and it is has a delightful sense of humor. I'm also very much in celebrating things.

Laura is available to work with private groups, therapy clients, school students, teachers, therapists, social workers, spiritual organizations, families, recovery groups and individuals on their own path.
